Battling the Big Lie: How Fox, Facebook, and the MAGA Media Are Destroying America Hardcover – June 7, 2022
Purchase options and add-ons
THE INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER OF YES WE (STILL) CAN! AND CO-HOST OF POD SAVE AMERICA.
BATTLING THE BIG LIE explains how to combat political disinformation and dangerous lies of the right-wing propaganda machine.
In BATTLING THE BIG LIE, bestselling author Dan Pfeiffer dissects how the right-wing built a massive, billionaire-funded disinformation machine powerful enough to bend reality and nearly steal the 2020 election. From the perspective of someone who has spent decades on the front lines of politics and media, Pfeiffer lays out how the right-wing media apparatus works, where it came from, and what progressives can do to fight back against disinformation.
Over a period of decades, the right-wing has built a massive media apparatus that is weaponizing misinformation and spreading conspiracy theories for political purposes. This “MAGA Megaphone” that is personified by Fox News and fueled by Facebook is waging war on the very idea of objective truth—and they are winning. This disinformation campaign is how Donald Trump won in 2016, almost won in 2020, and why the United States is incapable of addressing problems from COVID-19 to climate change.
Pfeiffer explains how and why the Republicans have come to depend on culture war grievances, crackpot conspiracies, and truly sinister propaganda as their primary political strategies, including:
- Republican efforts from Roger Ailes to Steve Bannon and Donald Trump to sow distrust while exploiting the media’s biases and the Democratic Party’s blind spots.
- The optimization of Facebook as the ultimate carrier of Trumpist messaging.
- Educating the Left to stop clutching pearls and start “fighting fire with fire.”
- How to fight back against the trolls spreading disinformation and hate on the Internet.

Review
“Our real lives and online lives are so confusing and frankly at times depressing that we want to just tune out but we know we can’t! Too much is at stake. In BATTLING THE BIG LIE which is part guide, part battle plan and a little bit of therapy, Pfeiffer helps breakdown how and why we got here, and gives us the tools to fight back against disinformation, talk to people we disagree with and help create an environment where progressive media can thrive. A vital read going into our upcoming elections."―Alyssa Mastromonaco, New York Times bestselling author and co-host of Crooked Media’s Hysteria podcast
“Democracy will not survive if truth continues to be a casualty of propaganda and disinformation. Battling the Big Lie is an enlightening, at times enraging, and always entertaining guide through the recent history of our politics and media, drawing on Dan Pfeiffer’s unparalleled experience. Read this book if you want to understand what is happening in American politics, why it is happening, and what you can do about it.”―Ben Rhodes, former Deputy National Security Advisor and author of After the Fall
"This is the book that progressives and Americans generally need to better understand the rise and resilience of Donald Trump and the Trump Republican Party. It’s not about him, as much as Trump wants everything to be about him, but about the right-wing media ecosystem of disinformation that’s sustained Trumpism. Dan Pfeiffer understands that and narrates it here as only a longtime practitioner of political communications can, and he delivers some yucks along with the hard and often depressing truths."―Jackie Calmes, Los Angeles Times columnist and author of Dissent
“Dan's most important book to date, BATTLING THE BIG LIE offers concrete solutions to one of the greatest challenges of our time - combatting disinformation and its corrosive impact on democracy. Whether you are a concerned citizen newly worried about the state of democracy or a political professional who has lamented the right-wing's devastatingly effective media machine for decades, BATTLING THE BIG LIE delivers an empowering, modern blueprint for fighting back.”―Jennifer Palmieri, Co-host of Showtime's The Circus and author of #1 New York Times bestseller Dear Madam President
“A new playbook for Democratic messaging with a bite and a sting.”―Kirkus Review
“The author does detail, with bracing clarity, just how effective right-wing messaging has been compared to that of the left—see the Big Lie—and he offers advice for mainstream media in advance of upcoming elections… Good advice for any side in a functioning democracy.”―Booklist Reviews

- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2024Dan Pfeiffer knows his stuff, both today's politics and the origins of some of our current issues. I highly recommend this book if you want to really understand how and why we got here. He talks alot about the voter suppression, lies, and disinformation and why they have been necessary for today's Republican party. Fascinating.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2022Written from experience, with intelligence and humor (gallows though it may be), Dan Pfeiffer once again does a deep dive into the motivations and mechanisms behind the poisonous extremism of the far right. If you need motivation or clarity to keep you in the fight and keep you working to save our country from those dangerous lunatics, buy and read this book. Buy it for friends and family. Love Dan on Pod Save America! Yes we Dan!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2022Dan Pfeiffer was President Obama’s communications director and is a current host on Pod Save America. He fuses old school media experience with current digital savvy in this spot-on analysis of why the Republicans are consistently winning the propaganda wars, and what the Democrats can do about it.
Pfeiffer’s basic thesis is that a decade ago, Democrats were winning the digital game, but they made a fundamental miscalculation. They spent all their energy honing the content of their messaging, and then attempted to deliver it by influencing the coverage of traditional media outlets. This doesn’t work because traditional media has no interest in passing along an unfiltered version of the Democratic message. The press needs to attract eyeballs, and the best way to do that is to feature conflict and setbacks.
In a tortured but apt analogy, Pfeiffer compares the Dem’s strategy to trying to distribute chocolate cookies, but only being able to do it through an anchovy distributor. Having its own agenda, the anchovy distributor puts an anchovy on each chocolate cookie before sending it out. He also sees the traditional media as focused on a lazy and specious form of objectivity that involves comparing unequal and unlinkable activities. Instead they should be focused on improving their credibility by stating honest and obvious truths about what each side is trying to accomplish.
By contrast, the Republicans have a seamless delivery system, no matter how nutty or mendacious the content might be. Their propaganda goes basically unfiltered right to the base, which uses social media to pass it along to their contacts (Your crazy uncle on Facebook syndrome). This well-funded, well-oiled machine amplifies conservative talking points and creates a bubble that opposing messages can’t penetrate.
According to Pfeiffer, the Democrats are at a disadvantage in the info wars because they still cling to fact based analysis, and they’re willing to tussle among themselves over policy and strategy. He doesn’t advocate moving away from those propensities, but he does believe Democrats need their own online content battalion to get information to the base unmediated by the press. The soldiers in that battalion are grassroots political activists.
He sees signs of hope in current digital initiatives, but acknowledges that Democrats are far behind the Republicans in delivering effective messaging to their voters. He wrote this book because he knows, as many do, that something has to change, fast, before it’s too late. Give him credit for this well-timed wake up call.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2022Pfeiffer’s book lays out the right-wing propaganda playbook and shows how dangerous it has become. Fox News, Facebook, Breitbart, and others all comprise a serious echo chamber where we are all losing our loved ones to complete and utter lies. While this is frightening and calamitous for America, the author also offers efforts underway and advice for those of us interested in battling this plague. A must read if you’re concerned with the future of the US political and social landscape.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2022Well written book that looks at the mess we are in clearly. It’s easy to get depressed by the amount of overwhelming untruths that people fall prey to lately. It feels like we are stuck but Dan has ideas that sound possible. He makes a case for the power of each of us to get busy doing our part. We all know people who might listen as well as the old guys/woman who never will. It’s up to us to make a difference with those we can talk to.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2022The author worked in communications in the Obama White House and does a great job explaining how political communications really works. He also spells out why the Republicans have such an upper hand in this area and the history of it all.
After lang out the problem he delves into ways to solve the problem.
A really good read and I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2022I’ve been frustrated for years, wondering how to counter the misinformation campaigns of extremists who abuse social media algorithms and the cowardice of traditional media to amplify their ugly message. This is a playbook for how to push back, written in Dan Pfeiffer’s smart, playful, and delightfully snarky manner. A good read, informative, interesting, and possibly our only hope against the dark side.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 8, 2022I'm a big Pod Save America fan and the reason I love that show is Dan Pfeiffer who offers sharp political analysis -- and always a smart way to combat the bad with the good. BATTLING THE BIG LIE is the perfect remedy to our currently political crisis. There's too much disinformation out there. There's too many people making bad faith arguments. And this book helped me get a much needed grip on how to tune out the useful idiots and tune in to what's important.
