ALTO, Texas (KETK) – A sophomore student died after collapsing during a basketball game in Alto on Tuesday, as learned.

Devonte Mumphrey fell in the second quarter of the game and later passed away, said a source.

Mumphrey was a basketball and football player at Alto High School, and he was also known as Vonte. Alto was scheduled for a game against Mount Enterprise on Tuesday.

“A good memory of Vonte for me was just watching him be a kid, playing basketball, being obedient as a child. You know he had a lot of his momma and a lot of his daddy in him, but he was a great kid. For this to happen to him, it’s sad,” said Kern Green, an Alto resident.

Earlier this month, Mumphrey had been nominated for Week 12 for Mr. Texas Basketball, which is selected by Dave Campbell’s Texas Basketball.

“He was a very good athlete and a very good hearted person,” said Green.

Alto ISD released a statement Tuesday night:
