YPSILANTI, Mich. – An Ypsilanti Community Schools student has died after experiencing a medical emergency during basketball tryouts, the district revealed.
Jaylen Mitchell, a YCHS Stemm Middle College senior, was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after suffering a medical emergency during the tryout, school officials said.

He died Monday night (Nov. 15), according to the school release.
“Jaylen has been described by his principal and coaches as a born leader that was well-liked by all his friends and staff, a great student who was smart, athletic and compassionate, and someone who touched the lives of others for the better,” the district said in a release. “Jaylen enjoyed his friendships, spending time with his family, and playing multiple sports. Our thoughts are with Jaylen’s family during this difficult time, and we offer our sincerest condolences to all in our community who were touched by Jaylen’s life.
“Every student is loved and cared for at YCS, and this news is devastating to our school community. Our District Trauma Team is providing opportunities for students and staff to discuss and work through issues related to the crisis and grief process over the coming days and weeks. Grief looks different for each of us and we recognize that such an incident can profoundly affect students, even when they were not in the same building, class or grade level. We are encouraging families to talk with their children about this tragedy and to reach out to the district if they have any questions or concerns about the grieving process.”
