The illegal Chinese bio lab in California is worse than you think

The story of the Chinese-linked bio lab discovered operating illegally in California may even be worse than you think, especially when you consider China’s brazen activities on American soil and the country’s role in the coronavirus pandemic.

For those unfamiliar with the story, officials in Reedley, California, discovered a bio lab operating without a license or permit. Inside the lab were nearly 1,000 mice bioengineered “to catch and carry the COVID-19 virus” and “at least 20 potentially infectious agents from chlamydia to hepatitis.”

The lab was only discovered because an inspector noticed a garden hose hooked up to the warehouse. It took 76 days and 14 different agencies to inspect and clean up the facility from April to July earlier this year.

The lab and samples belonged to Universal Meditech, a company that was taken over by Prestige Biotech, one of its creditors. According to NBC News, “Officials were unable to get any California-based address for either company except for the previous Fresno location from which UMI had been evicted.” According to court documents, the only addresses given to officials were empty offices or unverified Chinese addresses.
